If you are like me, sometimes you feel down. In such times, you desperately need an instant motivation to help you accomplish a certain task. Many think that it is impossible to spark motivation. I would like to help you to change that thinking today.
Lets say, it is on a Monday morning, right in front of you, there is a task that has to be finished to beat an approaching deadline. Your boss is waiting to evaluate it. However, your body is not willing to plunge into that task. At that point you desperately wish you could get motivated, get started, get going and finish the task.
I am here to show you exactly how to get the spark.
I have listed ten simple things that you can do to spark that much needed motivation.
The things listed here are carefully selected to ensure they can be applied in almost all situations. e.g. while in office, in bus/matatu, in church, in a house or while lying in bed.
1. Look at a Photo/picture
Have a photo or picture on your desk, bathroom mirror, fridge or pocket (wallet or business card wallet).
The photo or picture should be of a person or a thing that triggers strong inspirational feelings in you. The photo could be of a loved such as your child, your spouse or a hero.
Nowadays, it is also possible to save photos of your hero in your phone, Mp3 player, or computer. If these photos are in a portable device, you can access them virtually anywhere.
Lets say you feel bored while in a meeting or a conference, you can quickly pull the photos, look at them, they inspire you and give you that quick motivation necessary to get you going.
Heroes that people use to spark motivation include: Nelson Mandela, Barrack Obama, Bill Gates, Mother Teresa, Jesus Christ etc.
Some people prefer to use child hood heroes such as movie heroes e.g Rambo, MakMende etc.
2.Visit a Website
I have this habit of revisiting websites that have motivational quotes and stories. One of such website is the one you are reading now, Change Your T.
When I get the feeling of low morale, I re-read one of these websites and immediately I get back my lost energy and motivation.
Do a little search in the internet and you will find websites that you can use to inspire you when feeling down. Bookmark them so that you will not have trouble finding them in future.
3. Call a friend
When you feel down, uninterested, indifference or just bored, make a quick call to a friend who sparks that tingly feeling you.
Some people phone their mothers or loved ones. The advantage of a call is that you can make it from virtually everywhere (provided you have call credit).
In other cases, people go a step further. They pay a motivational expert. Everyday before they start their day or go to sleep, the motivational expert calls them and asks how they are doing. This helps these people to maintain focus on a certain task.
4.Spiritual verse
If you follow Christianity or any other religion, a spiritual verse based on your faith can work wonders in motivating you.
I am a Christian, so I use bible verses. I have bookmarked websites with specific motivational verses. I revisit these sites to get motivated.
It is also possible to write verses that inspires you on cards or diary and carry them around.
If you are ready to spend few bobs, it is also possible to buy cards printed with motivational spiritual verses.
You can also save spiritual verses in your phone, Mp3 player or have them as screen saver on your computer.
5.Take a short break
Sometimes you feel low due to tiredness. You need to relax, stretch or get some fresh air. Take a little walk down the corridor or look out through the window. This will revitalise you once again.
6. Write a card/letter
There is always something energising with writing a card to someone special. Keep a few greeting cards lying in your desk, car or bag.
Hand written letters with all the corrections have something touchy and personal. When you feel unenthusiastic, pull out a blank paper, write a hand written letter to someone special. Please do not type it on your computer. Make it hand written, the act of writing is the one that inspires you.
7. Read a section in a book
I know many people dread reading a book. Many hate voluminous books which take time to finish.
Books that are good for inspiration should have short chapters, utmost 2 pages, which can be read within 5-10 minutes. This ensures you get the spark before getting bored. Example of such books are: Greatness Guide by Robin Sharma or Who will cry when when I die by the same author. Other books with short verses are Rules of Life, Rules of work, Rules of love, Rules of Wealth all by Richard Templar.
Keep these books in your drawer, in your car or bed side. Read one chapter when you feel low. By the time you finish reading, you will be oozing with vitality and vigor.
If you use Sony Reader or any other E-Book reader, have a copy of these books in them. Nowadays, it is also possible to save books in iphone or other smart phones.
8. Re-read an email
My friends send me some very interesting and inspirational emails which I never delete. If I am feeling low, I re-read those emails and get that much needed kick in the ass. That kick gets me going and I am able to accomplish the task that could otherwise be procrastinated.
9. Watch a video clip.
This is a big trick.
Save some motivational video clips on your phone, mp3 player or computer. . When you get that undesirable feeling of boredom, watch them. You will get inspired to get back to your task.
You can also watch some videos from You Tube
The video clip should be short and inspirational. Should be utmost 5 minutes.
10. Listen to music
As they say music soothes the soul. Listening to music can create an energetic feeling in you. Some people listen to the same music over and over again to get that inspirational feeling.
Others dance to the music to get themselves going. To avoid disturbing your colleagues, use headphones to listen to music while in public places.
