Ken is a friend of mine. I like him because of the way he thinks. His thoughts are revolutionary. They always throw me away from my comfort cocoon. Here is a sample of his way of life, he swings and sways with life, he laughs when others are laughing and cries when others are crying.
I have never heard him complaining.
I have never heard him blaming others for his woes.
I always saw Ken whistling away at 5 am in the morning and saw lights on the window of his house past midnight.
Last week, I decided to call him and hear his opinion on the referendum on Kenyan Draft constitution. As usual, Ken was in his jovial mood. Instead of dwelling on how the Church is advocating for No vote, and Ruto is shouting No on roof tops, Ken was diplomatic.
10 Things that will happen after Voting either YES or No.
1. You will go to the same home (rented or owned) where you have been living.
2. Kenya power lamps and candles will still treat you with blackouts.
3. Your boss will still earn more than you and he will not go away.
4.You will buy petrol for your car at those exorbitant prices.
5. You will still complain of how your MP and president are doing nothing worthy their salary.
6. If you are a student, exams will not go away.
7. You will sleep the same way you have been sleeping either sideways, by backside or by front side.
8. Matatus will still be chaotic.
9. Your landlord will knock on your door every end of the month.
10. You will still complain of the injustice in the country.
What does Ken do
When Ken was in high school, he learnt one big lesson. His father was poor so he could not afford his school fees. Ken spent big chunk of time suspended from school due to fees arrears. He learnt that his life was his own and own alone. He will either make it or break it. No politicians or government will ever feed him, he has to feed himself. No government will educate him or his children, he has to do it himself.
He had to decide and decide quickly and well. The main decision was; how to live his life.
Four things that Ken quit
1. Politics and issues related to politics.
2. Friends who had political opinions which not beneficial.
3. Newspapers and magazine that spread rumours in the name of politics.
4.TV and Radio stations airing strong and unfounded political views.
Two Things that Ken embraced
Ken decided he wanted to be self reliance. After high school, he started a Jua kali business. The capital was meager but he started anyhow. People ridiculed him, but he always reminded himself of the Noah of the bible. He comforted himself that Noah had to endure mocking and jeers while building the ark, but he was safe during floods. Ken’s two principles.
1. You were born to win, but to be a winner, you must plan to win, prepare to win, and expect to win.
2. No politicking, no useless hullabaloo. Just voting and voting which is based on personal conviction.Ken is never influenced by politicians, church leaders, parents or friend on how to vote.
The slogan of Ken’s business is: don’t mix business with politics. Ken employs 20 people and makes a decent living. He owns his own decent home. He wakes up very early and sleeps very late. He enjoys his hard work.
I admire Ken for helping me think differently about politics. According to Ken, Politics is not loud mouth. Politics is not complaining. Politics is not oratory skills. Politics is not ability to convince an opponent during an argument.
