Computer Keyboard Affects Our Daily Lives

by Joshua Arimi on November 30, 2009

QWERTY KeyboardMany say QWERTY/AZERTY keyboard is awkward, sluggish, inefficient and confusing.

But we are all stuck in using this old styled QWERTY key board.

If you are wondering what I am talking about, look at the keyboard of the computer that you are using. Look at the top left corner of the second row of letters, just below the numbers row. You will see these six letters staring at you.

Why are the keyboards of typewrites and computers not in the alphabetical order that we all recognise? Alphabetical order is what we all know, understand and can write or type even in our sleep.

I find it clumsy and difficult to locate keys on QWERTY keyboard since I am a self taught typist. I assume you might also have found similar problems.

It could be easier for me if the letters were in alphabetical order.

However, regardless of how sophisticated computer gets, we are all stuck with this funny lettered keyboard.

Many opponents of this arrangement of letters in a computer keyboard have complained for the last 137 year.

They just complain, but no action. They criticize this type of keyboard, but nobody wants to take steps to rectify the problem.

The QWERTY keyboard was invented by American inventor by the name C. L. Sholes in 1860s and the first old, tedious typewriter with these letters was marketed in 1872.

Many argue that the reason that the keyboard letters are not arranged in an alphabetical order is that, during fast typing, the keys jammed.

It meant that, if you were a fast typist, the keys of that old typewriter machine used to get stuck.

Inventor Sholes figured out that, to ameliorate the jamming of the old and clumsy type writer, he had to change the arrangement of letters.

Sure enough, QWERTY order of letters worked.

How comes all of 6 billion people in the world are stuck with this slow, funny, inefficient lettered keyboard.

The answer is very simple. We are all happy in our comfort zone, despite the fact that comfort zone is inefficient, boring and draining.

There are all signs, signals and bell rings warning us that, our comfort zone is not good. But, we are busy ignoring them, so that we protect the status quo.

Look at your life and identify the comfort zone. Take the necessary steps to get you out of the comfort zone and let all of us move on to the Promised Land.

Areas in life that people get stuck in

Relationships

Over the weekend you traveled all the way across town to explain to your friend how you do not feel comfortable in your current relationship. Strangely,  you are doing nothing about it. If you do not take action, you will remain stuck.

Education

I know many students feel that the course they are following in their academics is not what they dreamt of during childhood. But, instead of changing the course, they are always yelling how they hate the program.

Politics

We are all witnessing our leaders misleading us, but, instead of showing them the door by votes, we just yap.

Yapping will not change anything. Action will.

Career

When I talk with friends, very few  like their workplace genuinely.

When I go back to my bed, I wonder why would some people do what they do not like?

Not long ago, I was in a similar situation and I understand why.

The main reason why many people are stuck with what they do not like

Fear

The main reason why all of us at one point or another get stuck with what we do not like is: fear.

Despite what people say, most of us are cowards, unusually very fearful animals.

Many argue that, they can kill a lion, but in reality, we know they cannot face their own fear.

Men have made nuclear bombs to kill their ‘perceived’ enemies. But ideally the real enemy is fear.

It is because we are fearful, that they we have to protect ourselves with bombs. If we were not fearful, then there is no need for guns and bombs to guard us.

Some of the fears that people have:

You fear that;  if you raise the issue of harassment with your boss, you will lose the job.

You fear that; if you tell your partner that, he/she is emotionally or physically abusing you, you will be ostracized.

You fear that; if you raise the finger against the government you will lose your job.

You fear that; if you follow your childhood dream, you my never achieve it or will live poor.

You fear that; if you point out what is wrong, you may get backlash or you may be haunted in future.

You fear that; if you follow your dream of being a writer/artist, you will live poor.

You fear that; You will not find a job after your education, so you are busy with additional workload of part-time job.

You fear that; if you leave that girl/man, you will never find another one.

You fear that; if you are not married by 30, the society will view you as an outcast.

You fear that; if you approach her (you know I am talking about), she will turn you down and you will be disappointed.

Face the fear and your life will definitely change.

qwerty is for countries where they speak English, azerty is for countries where they speak French … In Eastern Europe it is qwertzIn 1872, Remington produced the first mechanical typewriter, patented by C. Latham Sholes. Soon typists were going so fast that they were able to jam the keys which flew up to hit the typewriter ribbon. In the late 1870's: the "improved" Qwerty layout was designed to slow down typing, so those pesky keys would not jam anymore. Here is the speed trap we are stuck with today, 130 years later.
