Why I go to Church

As usual old men like to tease their lady age mates especially when it comes to things of God because they are sure death is beckoning.

One day, on a Monday, an old man passed by the home of an old lady friend. The old man never found sense in going to church, but the lady was a staunch church attendee.

After exchanging pleasantries, the man asked ‘Did u go to church yesterday?’

The lady replied ‘yes, I did’. ‘What were you taught?’ the old man asked.

The old lady tried to remember what they were taught but she could not remember a thing.

The old man looked at her and asked ‘did you watch your favourite preaching on TV last night?’. The lady answered, ‘yes, actually, I had to stay awake to watch it’.

‘Can you remember what the TV preacher was preaching?’ The lady could not remember, at this point she started feel embarrassed.

On the other hand, the old man was feeling good because he had cornered her. He asked her ‘WHY DO YOU GO TO CHURCH RELIGIOUSLY THEN?’

A brilliant idea popped in her head. ‘Sir, would you mind to do me a favour’, she softly with flattering voice requested. Please take that woven basket that I use to carry dirty potatoes from the farm and use it to fetch water for me from the stream.

The old man looked at the lady, then to the woven basket, and back to the lady. He smiled and said. ‘Are you teasing me?’.  ‘No’, she replied.

As all the old men do, he composed himself and with a lot of wisdom said, ‘by the time I get out of the river, the water will sip through the gaps in the basket and I will get here with empty basket’.

The old lady smiled, sipped coffee from her tall metal cup and said similarly that’s why I cannot remember anything from the teachings in the church. But, one thing I know for sure is that, If you take that woven basket to the river and fetch water with it, it might not bring home any water, but the water will wash off the dust and mud making it cleaner.

Although it might not hold any water for a long time, the more times you take it to the river the cleaner it will be.
